Bogota previously called Santa Fe de Bogota, is the capital city of Colombia, as well as the most crowded city in the country, with an estimated 7,055,752 population as of 2008. Bogota and its urban area, which includes municipality such as Chía, Cota, Soacha, Cajica and La Calera, had an expected population of 8,244,980. In terms of land region, Bogota is also the biggest in Colombia, and its elevation makes it the third-highest main city in the world, after La Paz and Quito.


It has many universities and libraries, Bogota has become known as "The Athens of South America". Bogota’s regular growth and effort to establish itself as one of the world’s most significant cities has not been unnoticed. Bogota is ranked as a World City in the same category as other global metropolitan areas such as San Francisco, Washington, Los Angeles, Dubai and Berlin, and above others such as Boston, Miami or Montreal.

Bogota is situated close to the geographic center of Colombia, on the east of the Savannah of Bogota, 2640 meters above sea level. Though it is situated in what is commonly called the "sabana", literally meaning "savannah", the geographical location is in fact a high plateau in the Andes Mountains. The total region is also recognized as "Altiplano Cundiboyacense" which literally means "high highland of Cundinamarca and Boyaca".

The ‘sabana’ is bounded to the east by the Eastern Cordillera of the Andes mountain series. Nearby hills, bound city expansion, and goes from south to north, parallel to the Guadalupe and Monserrate mountains. The western city limit is the Bogota River. The Sumapaz Paramo limits the south and to the north Bogota extends over the mentioned plateau up to the towns of Chía and Sopó.

Bogota has a Subtropical raised ground weather. The average temperature on the ‘sabana’ is 14.0°C, varying from 3°C to 25°C. Arid and wet seasons swap throughout the year. The driest months are December, January, February and March; the rainiest are April, May, September, October and November. June and July are usually rainy periods and August is sunny with high winds. Hailstorms are frequent during the raining season, and can be very strong, especially in October.
