Birmingham is a city and large metropolitan area in the West Midlands county of England. It is the most heavily populated British city outside London having estimated population of around 1,016,800. The city is located at the heart of the West Midlands, which is the country’s second most densely inhabited metropolitan region with a population of 2,284,093 (2001). The city Birmingham acted as a powerhouse for the Industrial Revolution in England that is why it is called the workshop of the world or the city of a thousand trades. Presently the industrial importance of Birmingham has decreased and it is transformed into a national commercial center making it the second best place in the United Kingdom to locate a business. It is the central hub for conferences, retail and events including high tech, research and development sector, held up by its three Universities. Thousands of tourists arrives in this city annually making it the fourth-most visited city by foreign visitors in the UK, has the second-largest city economy in the UK and is often referred to as the Second City.

Birmingham is situated in the middle of the West Midlands area of England on the Birmingham Plateau. It is the area with relatively high ground, ranging around 500 to 1,000 feet above sea level and crossed by Britain’s main north-south watershed between the basins of the Rivers Severn and Trent. To the southern and western side of the city is the Lickey Mountains, Clent Hills and Walton Hill, which are around 1,033 feet tall giving an extensive aerial view of the city.

The City of Birmingham makes a metropolitan area with the largely inhabited area of Solihull to the south eastern side and with the city of Wolver Hampton and the industrial towns of the Black Country to the north western side.
