Bhopal city is the capital of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh and the governmental headquarter of Bhopal District and Bhopal Division. It is also known as the City of Lakes as it contains a number of natural lakes. Bhopal is also one of the greenest cities of India. The city had acquired international attention after the tragic Bhopal disaster, when the pesticides manufacturing plants leaked poisonous methyl isocyanate gas on 3 December 1984. The plant was under the control of Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL).


This leakage of gas caused the most horrible industrial tragedy in history and caused massive loss of human lives which was numbered in thousands. Hundreds of others rendered sick and have been facing serious health problems such as psychological and neurological disabilities, blindness etc. it also caused skin, vision and breathing disorders among the people of this city and raised the rate of birth defects, in children whose parents or even grandparents were exposed to that deadly leakage. Near the factory site, the soil and ground water has been polluted due to poisonous contaminants still leaking from the factory. The government of India, however, urges that no such type of pollution has taken place or that any such toxins are even present in or around the city.

Since this incident, Bhopal city has been a midpoint of protests and campaigns by thousands of people from across the World. The average elevation of the city is around 499 meters above the sea level. It is situated in the middle part of the country and on the northern side of the upper limit of the Vindhya mountain ranges. Situated on the plateau of Malwa, which is higher than the north Indian plains and the land rises towards the Vindhya Range to the southern side. The city has variable elevation and has small hills within and around its boundaries. The main hills in Bhopal consist of hills of Idgah and Shyamala in the northern area and Arera Mountains in the middle area.
