Bhaktapur is an ancient Newar town in the eastern side of the Katmandu Valley, Nepal. It is situated in Bhaktapur District in the Bagmati region. It is the third biggest city in Katmandu valley and was once the capital of Nepal during the great Malla Kingdom until the second half of the 15th century. The city is listed as a World Heritage by UNESCO for its loaded culture, temples, and wood, metal and stone artwork. The name “Bhaktapur” means “The Town Of Devotees”. The city is also called “Khwopa” or “Bhadgaon” or “Ancient Newari Town” through out the Katmandu valley. The city is the center of historical monuments and craft works, magnificent windows, pottery and weaving industries, excellent temples, traditional art and architecture, beautiful ponds, rich local customs, culture, religion, festivals, musical mystic and so on. It is a preserved ancient city, which in fact, is itself a world to explore for tourist.

The city is located around 13 km eastern side of Katmandu and situated on the old trade route to Tibet. The total area of the city is around 119 km² at an altitude of 1,401 meters above sea-level. Bhaktapur district, in which the Bhaktapur city is located, is the smallest district of Nepal. The estimated population of the city was about 172.543 in 2001. The male residents of this city wear a special type of cap called the Bhaad-gaaule topi.

The city is a popular destination for tourists visiting Katmandu. Due to increasing air pollution in Katmandu, more tourists like to stay in Bhaktapur for a few days, before trekking arrangements are finished. Despite of the fact that view of Mount Everest (i.e. Sagarmatha) is marvelous; tourists visiting Nepal still don’t feel satisfied unless they have experienced Bhaktapur, Nepal’s ancient "City of Culture"
