Baltimore is an independent city and the biggest city and cultural hub of the U.S. state of Maryland. The city is situated in central Maryland along the tidal region of the Patapsco River, a stretched portion of the Chesapeake Bay. Baltimore is also known as Baltimore City to make distinction between the city and surrounding Baltimore County. The city was established in 1729, and it is a main American seaport and is located near main Midwestern markets than any other main harbor on the East shore. Its internal port was once the second leading port of entry for migrants to the United States and a main manufacturing center.
The port is currently a home to Harbor place, a shopping, entertainment, and tourist center, and the National Aquarium in Baltimore. Due to the reduction in the manufacturing sector the city has changed its attention towards service-oriented economy. Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Hospital are now the city’s biggest employers. Once a main industrial city having economic base focused on steel processing, shipping, auto manufacturing, and transportation, the city had undergone through de-industrialization which resulted in lost of thousands of low-skill, high-wage jobs. While it retains some industry, Baltimore now has a modern service financial system providing a rising economic, business, and health service base for the southern Mid-Atlantic region.
The population of Baltimore is around 636,919. The Baltimore urban region has approximately 2.7 million inhabitants; the 20th biggest in the country. Baltimore is also the biggest city in the surrounding Baltimore urban region of 2,668,056 and in the combined statistical area of approximately 8.3 million inhabitants. Greater Baltimore is home to six Fortune 1000 companies: Constellation Energy, Grace Chemicals, Black & Decker, Legg Mason, T. Rowe Price, McCormick & Company and lots of others.
