Baku City is the capital, the biggest city, and the largest port of Azerbaijan. situated on the southern shore of the Absheron Peninsula. Baku is one of the oldest and biggest cities in East for antiquity, territory and population.
More than 94% of the residents of Baku are followers of Islam. A small minority of the population are Christians. Baku also has three Jewish communities, namely the Ashkenazim Jews, the Mountain Jews, and the Georgian Jews.
The main source of income is petroleum. The existence of petroleum has been known since the 8th century. Baku boasts many universities and vocational schools. After Azerbaijan gained independence, the fall of Communism led to development of a number of private institutions. Baku also houses the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan founded here in 1945. Baku is divided into eleven regions, which are Azizbayov, Binagadi, Garadagh, Narimanov, Nasimi, Nizami, Sabail, Sabunchu, Khatai, Surakhany and Yasamal. It has 48 townships. Among these are the townships on islands in the Baku Bay and the town of Oil Rocks built on stilts in the Caspian Sea, 60 km (37 mi) away from Baku.
Baku’s economy is based on petroleum and natural gas. Oil was discovered in Baku around the turn of the 20th century and was exploited after 1923 for the better part of that century. Today, Baku is known for its petrochemical, electrical, mechanical, and radio industry, as well as for electronics, telecommunications, and machine tools industry. At the center of the city, industrial, cultural, and educational centers, compete with markets filled with vegetables, fruits, cotton, grapes, and tobacco. Additionally, the city has countless libraries, museums, clubs theaters, and institutions of higher learning.
Baku’s climate is hot and dry in the summer and cool and wet in the winter. The average temperature in July is +26ºC, and in January, +3ºC. The south-western part of Great Baku is a drier region of Azerbaijan. Baku sits on the Abs heron peninsula, and it is frequently buffeted by winds blowing across the Caspian.
Major places of interest in Baku include both modern and ancient sites. The most interesting moodier site is the township of Oil Rock, which is built 60 miles out into the sea. Other modern sites are the Azerbaijan Art Museum, the Azerbaijan Carpentry and Folk Applied Art Museum, and the Nizami Azerbaijan Literature Museum. Structures that recall Baku’s past include the Icheri Sheker Fortress (AD 1078) with its Sinik Kala Minaret still very much intact, the Sherwanshah Palace (AD 1400s) ensemble which harks to the days when Baku was the capital of the mighty Sherwanshah, and. the Maiden Tower.
