Arkansas is a state located in the southern section of the United States. Its name comes from an Algonquin name of the Quapaw Indians. Arkansas contains a boundary with six states, with its eastern boundary mainly defined by the Mississippi River. Its varied characteristics range from the hilly regions of the Ozarks and the Ouachita Mountains, which makes the U.S. internal high ground, to the eastern low grounds down the Mississippi River. The capital and most heavily populated city is Little Rock, situated in the central section of the state.

The Mississippi River makes most of Arkansas’s eastern boundary, except in Clay and Greene counties where the St. Francis River develops the western limit of the Missouri Boot heel, and in dozens of areas where the present channel of the Mississippi has meandered from where it had last been officially specified. Arkansas has its southern boundary with Louisiana, its northern boundary with Missouri, its eastern boundary with Tennessee and Mississippi, and its western boundary with Texas and Oklahoma.

Arkansas is a land of hills and valleys, heavy forests and rich plains. The so-called Low grounds are better recognized by names of their two areas, the Delta and the Grand Prairie. The Arkansas Delta is a plain landscape of fertile soils formed by frequent flooding of the adjoining Mississippi. Away from the river, in the southeast section of the state, the Grand Prairie contains a more undulating landscape. Both are rich agricultural lands.

The Delta area is divided by an extraordinary geological formation recognized as Crowley’s Ridge. A thin group of rolling hills, Crowley’s Ridge rises from 250 to 500 feet over the nearby plain and underlies a lot of of the main towns of eastern Arkansas. The state’s agriculture outputs are poultry and eggs, soybeans, sorghum, cattle, cotton, rice, hogs, and milk. Its industrial outputs are food processing, electric equipment, fabricated metal products, machinery, paper products, bromine, and vanadium.
