Antsirabe is the third biggest city in Madagascar. The estimated population of the city was around 183,000. It’s the capital of the Vakinankaratra area. The altitude is about 1,500 m (4,900 ft), so the climate is rather cold. The city contains Tiko (milk and other food products), Star Brasseries (beverages), Cotona (textiles) and Kobama (grain). The city is located at the edge of TA (Tananarive-Antsirabe) railway, currently only with cargo trains. The line has been extended southwards through Vinaninkarena, but the expansion is not used. National road 7 links the city to Antananarivo (North), Fianarantsoa and Toliara (South). The city contains the warm springs and a thermal bath, which was particularly well known in the 19th century. The city was established by a Norwegian missionary to serve as a retreat center because of the weather. The name of the city translates into “the place of much salt”.

The country is basically a semi-presidential representative democratic republic, whereby the Prime Minister of Madagascar is head of government, and of a plate form. It contains a multi-party system. Executive power is exercised by the government. Legislative power is vested in both the government and the Senate and the National Assembly. The Judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature. The political condition in the area is marked by struggle for control. After Madagascar gained independence from France in 1960, assassinations, military coups and disputed elections featured prominently.

The inner clashed in the area had been minimal in the years that followed and since 2002, Ravalomanana and his party, Tiako-I-Madagasikara (TIM), have dominated political life. In an effort to limit the power and influence of the president, the prime minister and the 150-seat parliament have been given greater power in recent years.
