The city is a section of the Atlantic Coastal Plain, and is fairly flat, with the highest point being only 50 feet over sea level. The city has an overall area of 7.6 square miles, of that, 6.7 square miles is land and 0.9 square miles is covered with water. Annapolis is located in the moist weather region, with hot summers and cool winters. Low altitude and closeness to the Chesapeake Bay give the region modest temperatures, with warmer winter temperatures and cooler summer temperatures than locations further inland, such as Washington, DC.
