Albany is a city in the United States of America; it is the capital of the state of New York and the regional seat of Albany County. Albany is approximately 136 miles northern side of the city of New York, and somewhat southern side of the meeting point of the Mohawk and Hudson Rivers. The city lies on the Hudson River and has a main port. Albany has secure ties with the close by cities of Troy, Schenectady, and Saratoga Springs, forming an area called the Capital District, a historic region of the United States. The mass of this region is made up of the Albany Schenectady Troy municipal Area, which has a populace of 850,957; this MSA is the fourth biggest municipal region in New York and the 56th major MSA in the United States.

Albany was built on the location of the Dutch Fort Orange and its neighboring community of Beverwyck. The English occupied the location from the Dutch in 1664 and renamed it Albany, in honor of James II, Duke of Albany. Albany is the second oldest city in the state in terms of its date of integration. The economy is greatly reliant on the state government, with much of Albany’s populace being engaged by a variety of state departments and legislators. Albany is more and more seen as a leader in nanotechnology, with the University at Albany’s nanotechnology program being respected as a national leader. The city is at the hub of a 19-county area in eastern New York state recognized as “Tech Valley” due to the increasing number of companies, entrepreneurs and research facilities focusing on high-tech industries such as nanotechnology, biotechnology, homeland security, information technology and alternative energy. The city has a total area of 21.8 sq mi; 21.4 sq mi of that region is land and 0.5 sq mi consists of water. The Pine Bush, situated on the far edge of the city with Guilderland and Colony is the only sizable inland Pine Barrens and sand dunes in the United States, and is home to a lot of rare species including the Karner Blue butterfly. Four lakes are located within city limits, including Buckingham Lake, Rensselaer Lake, Tivoli Lake, and Washington Park Lake.
