Alaska is the biggest state of the United States of America by land area; it is to be found in the northwestern extremity of the North American continent, with Canada to the eastern side, the Arctic Ocean to the northern side, and the Pacific Ocean to the western and southern side, with Russia to the west across the Bering Strait.

Alaska has a long shoreline than all the other U.S. states combined. It is the only non adjacent U.S. state on continental North America; about 500 miles of British Columbia separate Alaska from Washington State. Alaska is therefore an exclave of the United States. It is in principle part of the continental U.S., but is often not integrated in colloquial use; Alaska is not part of the contiguous U.S., often called “the Lower 48.” The capital city, Juneau, is located on the mainland of the North American continent, but is not linked by road to the other parts of North American highway system.

The state is surrounded by the Yukon Territory and British Columbia in Canada, to the eastern side, the Gulf of Alaska and the Pacific Ocean to the southern side, the Bering Sea, Bering Strait, and Chukchi Sea to the western side and the Arctic Ocean to the northern side. Alaska is the biggest state in the United States in land area at 586,412 square miles, much larger than Texas, the next biggest state. Alaska is larger than all but 18 sovereign countries. Counting territorial waters, Alaska is larger than the joint area of the next three largest states: Texas, California, and Montana. It is also larger than the combined area of the 22 smallest U.S. states.

Alaska’s major export product is seafood, mainly salmon, cod, Pollock and crab. Agriculture represents only a fraction of the Alaskan financial system. Agricultural production is mainly for consumption within the state and includes nursery stock, dairy products, vegetables, and livestock. Manufacturing is limited, with most foodstuffs and general goods imported from elsewhere. Employment is basically in government and industries such as natural resource extraction, shipping, and transportation.
