Al-Ubayyid is also called El Obeid). It is the capital of the state of North Kurdufan in central Sudan. The estimated population of the city was around 340,940 in 2008. It is a vital transportation center for the area and contains a rail line, the junction of number of roads and camel caravan routes, and the end of a pilgrim route from Nigeria. The 500 km journey now takes about nine hours by tourist coach.

The city is one of the 26 wilayat or states of Sudan. The total area of the city is around 185,302 km². The city was inhabited by nomads and pastoralists, including the Yazeed tribes. The region has had almost continuous drought since the mid 1960s. Deforestation led to the devastation of the natural vegetation. NGO’s working in the villages of Sudan tried to fix the damage. They set up women’s centers. These centers permit many women gain an income. Training was introduced and a solar energy system set up. NGOs recognize that a need exists for longer projects requiring the kind of support that only can come from governments and large agencies.
