Kathmandu is the capital and biggest urban city of Nepal. The city is the metropolitan core of the Kathmandu Valley in the Himalayas, which also contains two sister cities namely Patan or Lalitpur, 5 kilometers to its southeastern side and Bhaktapur, 14 kilometers to its eastern side. It is also acronymed as ‘KTM’ and named ‘tri-city’. The altitude of the city is about 1,350 meters (4,400 ft) from the sea level and it is in the bowl-shaped valley in central Nepal bounded by four main mountains, namely: Shivapuri, Phulchowki, Nagarjun and Chandragiri. It is populated by 671,846 people. The Kathmandu valley has a population density of only 97 per km2 whereas Kathmandu urban city has a population density of 13,225 per km2. It is by far the biggest metropolitan area in Nepal, accounting for 20% of the urban population in an area of 5,067 hectares (12,520 acres) (50.67 square kilometers (19.56 sq mi)).
